I just spent 3 ****ing hours trying to repair the damage to my system from
spyware unwittingly dl'd by my boys when they go online and I'm not around.

I thought I saw a recent thread here about a program that could lock up an
executable. I'd like to lock down all my browsers. Such a beast exist?

Why not simply rename the exe-files to ex_-files or txt-files? :-)

If they were younger and less knowledgeable this might work. However, they
are a little more clever than that. However, you've given me a thought. . .
perhaps I could "re-route" the request through something like AutoIt or
BatchRun to trick them into thinking I've encrypted the original file.

exercise parental control and lock down the computer completely...password
protect the BIOS boot sequence and let them buy their own computers...just a
thought...<LOL>

Not a bad idea - but it will postpone the problem just for a short
period of time :-)

Don't lose your password or you're SOL.

Zip the exe's (or a .DLL common to those exe's) with password.
Include anything that would let them search for and d/l
password-guessing s/w.

To unzip, make a shortcut w/ prompt for the password.

I just read about this yesterday but have no need of it myself so didn't
go into it much.

Doug Knox's Security Console

I dont think it will do what you want but you might be able to find a
use for it.

How to avoid this: Use a firewall, anti-virus prog., anti-adware-prog., and
make backups!
I use these tools, make regular backups of my data, and regularly make an
image of my system-partition (C:-drive).
If something bad happens to my system (Like it did to yours), all I have to
do is to restore my system-image and restore my data-backup - and I'm in
business again...

you should create a separate partition and create a dual boot system. So the
children can boot up into their own copy of windows.

Will definitely do that the next machine I get. Too much effort and time to
do that now though. . .

Yeah, do all that already. In this case, something corrupted my Internet
Explorer. (I don't use it, my boys do.) In the end, I rolled back the
registry and that fixed the problem.

Good idea, but I think my idea is simpler in execution. :)

I'm trying a program called Crypto-lock. The original executable has been
renamed and the copy has been locked with a password. Let's see how they
fair against that. . .

if you find partition magic 8 from emule you can partition your drive
without formating, then you can install windows on the second partition. If
you have win2k or xp then the dual boot will be setup automatically.

Just back up any critical data before doing this.

A better idea IMO would be to have the hard drive in a removable
caddy. Have two. One drive for you and one for the children.

Another suggestion if you just want to protect an executable: Password
Protection System Lite
http://www.necrocosm.com/ppslite.html
Rather strange 'skin' but it works ok. On my fairly standard PC (WinME 1024
x 768) the Crypto-lock program window is all over the place - impossible to
find any buttons or entry boxes ...
