does anyone know of a simple (and inexpensive) way to password protect one
or more folders in windows xp home?

thanks..

yes there is, actually its right there in from of you.
its native in xp. XP has a built in support for zip files
before you can password protect your folder. first you
have to zip it with XP's zip feature.

1. first you create a new empty compressed zip folder,
just like creating a new folder. right click on an empty
space anywere and create a new compressed zipped foler.
you will see it as an available template.

2. after creating the new compressed zip folder. now you
turn your attention to the folder you want to protect.
right click on that folder and locate "send to" compressed
zip folder. now the foler you want to protect is being
compressed or zipped.

3. now you can move the folder you just zipped to the
compressed zip folder you created on step 1 , now open the
compressed zip folder you created, where you moved your
folder that needs to be password protected. click on File
add password, just as simple as that.

good luck.

XP does not use the password protection scheme that was common in
Win9x/Me. In XP you can set permissions on files/folders that will
allow/deny access to said files/folders to various users. Passwords
aren't part of the mix. The best options will be available if you
have formatted the OS partition in NTFS as well.
