password problems in XP

I use OE6 in XP Home and noticed a weird behavior.

Recently, when I dial out the password verification would not work at my
ISP. I noticed that the reason was because the memorized password (the
asterisks) in OE's automated dialup was twice as long as it should be. When
I correct the password in the asterisked line, the connection and
verification worked, but the next time the double length password was back
again.

I went into the screen OE brings up titled "Dial up connection", clicked on
settings, changed the password, clicked OK, etc. and when I am back to the
old password it's the double length one again.

When I go into Tools/accounts/my ISP's account and click on settings the
password is correct there. Yet, when I dial out from OE, the password is
doubled again!

How do I correct this problem?

Thanks.

it will always show more asteriusks than the password actually has letters -
this is a security
thing - your password is still as you typed it.

The number of '*' bears no relation to the length of the password. This
is deliberate, to confuse the ungodly. it should work just fine if you
have typed the right thing, regardless of how many '*' are shown.

No, this is by design. It's not a double-length password. All
that's happening is that Windows *displays* the maximum numbers
of bullets in place of the password, so nobody looking over your
shoulder as you type it can get a head start on guessing it by
seeing how long it is.
