Password logon problem

I had made a password reset disk on my other (older) computer, and now, after about a year of not using it, I forgot my password. When I try to use the password reset disk, I get a "<A>" (without brackets) instead of "You can" (use the password recovery disk...). My brother is away at vacation and I have no way of communicating with him, but he has one of the user's passwords, but I really need the other computer right. Is there any way of fixing this outside of logging in? If there isn't, then please give me step-by-step instructions as to how to fix this problem after logging in. Thank you.
