XP SP2
My Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop went into Standby. Upon return from Standby, I
was prompted for a login password. I typed the correct password, but XP
displayed a balloon message asking if I'd forgotten my password. Caps lock
wasn't ON accidentally. Yes, I typed the correct password (10 times).

I shutdown XP completely, rebooted then was prompted for my password. I
typed the same password again, then I was logged in successfully.

You use special characters in your password, and have different
keyboard setup for default and your profile?

I experienced a similar problem after putting the desktop into Hibernation
(vs. Standby). My lowercase password wouldn't work unless I typed it in
Uppercase. The numlock was on; when I turn numlock off, my password works.

Question - what effect does numlock have on non-numeric keys? I don't want
to leave numlock off, because then my numeric passwords on applications
don't work.

Thanks for any assistance.

Simple, on a laptop keyboard you replace some letter keys with numbers
when "numlock" is engaged.

The other person was. In your case, I would hazard a guess the "wake up
from hibernation" doesn't properly initalize the keyboard. You could try
typing in the username area to see what the computer is receiving from
the keyboard right after it comes out of hibernation.
