Yesterday I posted a query asking if anyone could help me
to restore my boot.ini file so I could dual boot XP/2003
after I stupidly overwrote the boot.ini file after
restoring from a drive image. Someone kindly sent me the
following advise.

"Sure, edit the boot.ini file (start --> run -->
c:\boot.ini) and add:
multi(#)disk(#)rdisk(#)partition(#)\WINDOWS="Microsoft
Windows Server 2003"
/fastdetect

If it's just another partition on the same disk, take the
same #'s for
milti, disk, rdisk and increase partition by 1 from your
XP setup.

I don't have an install of 2003 server, so also make sure
the directory is
correct. If it installs into a winnt directory change
the \WINDOWS above to
\WINNT"

I tried this but when I select Windows Server 2003 from
the boot menu, I just get a blank screen.

i just have one disk, partitioned into 5. and Windows2003
is on the 5th patition.

So my Boot.ini looks like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft
Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(5)\WINDOWS="Microsoft
Windows Server 2003" /fastdetect

Does anyone have idea why I still can only boot into
WinXP??
Thanks in advance for any help

Matt:

1) The boot.ini file you posted in your message is correct.

2) Re: the blank screen:
Win2k3 server will do that when you boot with the ntdetect.com and ntldr
files from Win XP.
Copy those two files from the \i386 folder on your Win2k3 server CD disc to
C:\ on your hard disk.

Hi
Thanks for this - it NEARLY works!!!
I can go as far as the logon screen in Windows2003 but

Are there any other files that need to be copied from the

Mat:

1) Did you try another user acct at the logon screen?

2) If you did not promote it to a DC:
(warning this can work on XP, but I have not tested it on Win2k3 server yet)
Copy all of the files from \windows\system32\config\ to another folder.
Then delete the files in \windows\system32\config\ that have following
extensions:
..sav
..log
..evt

Then copy the following files from \windows\repair\ to
\windows\system32\config\
default
sam
security
software
system
