I'm running XP Pro on a new Dell Dimension 8300, 120 gig hd. I installed a
new retail copy of PartitionMagic 8.0 Followed all directions to make a
separate 20 gig partition from my C: drive.

I keep getting error # 1513 Bad attribute position in file record.

I've run the upgrade patch to version 8.1 and run chkdsk /f from the
command prompt as Powerquest recommends.

I've done everything Powerquest suggests for this and I'm at the end of my
rope. Can't call them today because of the holiday and I'd like to get this
done. Anyone have the same problem/solution? Thanks.

Thanks, but I don't see how that helps with my problem. I'm not
having trouble with the installation of PartitionMagic, just getting
it to work
with XP. Perhaps I wasn't clear. I get the error message in the
middle of the task of creating the new partition.

Are you trying to partition from within Windows? IIRC, PM 8 lets you do
this, but I don't think it's a good idea. Make a PM boot disk and boot
with it and try your partitioning outside the operating system.

Dianne, are you booting with the floppy disks, created when you installed
PM?
I get the best results doing so on my computer, and it saves time by not
having to reboot so many times.

It's a long shot; ask PQ if there is a way to find out which file is
is causing the problem (assuming it's a single file.) and see if
you can copy it to a temp file, delete and rename back.

I had a problem with an NTFS file system and I tried this. Turned
out that it was a system file causing the problem and I wound
up reinsatlling. PITA.
