right now I have one partition on my laptop, and I want to
reinstall XP and wipe the slate clean of files.

problem is, it won't let me make a new partition on the
drive because xp setup is using the old partition
temporarily to install windows... how do I format my drive?

I already used the support article, and the step by step
doesn't work because XP setup won't let me delete my old
partition. the volume is still in use because xp setup
installed temporary files on the drive before asking me
which partition I wanted to use

any help?

You must setup the BIOS to boot from the CD as the first
boot device. Select to install, delete the current
partition and create you new partitions.
