Is there a way, during a reformat to partition off about 5
gigs of my hard drive so I may use it as "back up"? When I
used the "file and settings transfer" utility, it came up
with a 1.6 gig file that I had no where to go with so I
could reformat and then, using the file and settings
transfer utility, point to it for my old settings and files.
I have a friend who was willing to give me the space on his
server, but even with DSL, the transfer would have taken
about 14 hours :( I have everything backed up on a few CD's
this time (including SP1), but it sure would be nice to be
able to use the file and settings transfer utility for the
next reformat. Thanks in advance for any help you can give
me. Beck

Yup but you have to delete other partitions if you don't already have
the unused space available. During the setup program (Text Mode - blue
screens), just read the screens and you will find the one about
partitioning.

Sure. When installing XP, one of the first steps is to partition your disk.
Setup will guide you through the procedure.

XP installation gives you an opportunity to partition and format. If you want
to save space for a 5GB partition, delete the existing partition and create a
new primary partition using all available space except for 5120 MB (5 X 1024
MB). Format the new partition and install XP.

Once the installation is finished and you're ready to create your 5GB partition,
right click on My Computer and select Manage > Disk Management. Right click on
the unused portion of the hard drive and create an extended partition. Once
you've done that, right click on it again and create a logical partition,
indicating a drive letter, partition name if any, and your formatting
preference. It will then format.

The only way to accomplish this without destroying a current XP installation is
with a third party program such as Partition Magic or BootIt NG.

I agree that you should let XP create your partitions
during re-format. I would suggest that you avoid
Partition Magic particularly if you are using NTFS.

Good Luck
