Partitioning a hard drive

Novice here. I just purchased a machine from Gateway with
XP Home Edition already loaded. I want to partition the
hard drive into C: & D:. Since the disk has no
unallocated space it appears I cannot add a D: drive.

There is nothing else on the computer, it's new. If I use
the disk that came with it to reinstall XP, is there
someplace in the process I can set up the partitions?

I'm planning to set up the C: drive at either 15 or 20
gigs... is there any reason I shouldn't do that?
Thanks in advance for responding.

Ken,

one reason not to split your drive into partitions is that you
would hack your most valuable asset into pieces---the free space
on your disk.

If you still want to do that, I think you should have a good
reason. I never do it.
