Hi Group

I believe that over the last few weeks my HDD has been on its way out, as I
kept getting the BSOD and I did narrow it down to my HDD. The problem now
is that I used a disk diagnostic program to check to HDD and for some
unknown reason it has unpartitioned it. I used my XP installation disk to
repair/re-install windows and the initial screen said it has 'unpartitioned
space' of x mb's.

I am going out to buy a new HDD, but is there any way that I can
re-partition the old HDD without wiping what is on there, so that I can
recover some of the important files I have?

Thanks

Hi,

.........I am going out to buy a new HDD,

That may or may not be your problem. Go the the manufacturers site that
made your HD and download their free diagnostic software and find out
for sure. The BSOD can be caused by a multiplicity of problems unrelated
to your HD, lack of cooling for example.

.........but is there any way that I can re-partition the old HDD without
wiping what is on there,

There's probably a program that can do it for free, but you can also get
a copy of Partition Magic 8 off ebay for under $30 and do it too.

...............so that I can recover some of the important files I have?

You can also easily take out your old drive, install your OS on your new
drive, then install your old drive as a slave and see what it has on it.
Might just be a matter of dragging things from the slave to the master
and not fooling around with partitioning at all.

It's always best to try the EZ stuff first.
