Partition New Ext "E" drive

I bought a 100 gig Maxtor external HD to back up my laptop HD.
I try following the directions on WinXP help but cant seem to get to the NEW
PARTITION selection as I make my way ther the pull down menus past MANAGE
and DISK MANAGEMENT.

Any ideas. ?

Have you right-clicked on the square box that represents the external
disk, and selected "initialize"? This is the very first step in
installing a new hard drive, and comes before partitioning and
formatting.

Bad Nowhere (after right clicking in WinXP), in any of the pull down
menus was there an option to select "Initialize"

Good there was a line saying 'Cancel Partition'. I said WTH and
clicked that. It appears there was a small partition already there (but not
labelled as one) right from when I plugged it into the USB drive. Once I rt
clicked on the E drive graphics bar and selected Cancel Partition..It did
clear the box and RT clicking again DID give me the "NewPartition" pulldown.
I have it all set up now thanks.
