So your plan is to take away space on the physical hard drive to create a
new partition?
And - with everything on the same physical hard drive - you are calling it a
backup?

My suggestion, spend a couple hundred and get an external USB/Firewire 320GB
drive.

I would suggest purchasing an external hard drive
to use for backup purposes. What good would
backing up to a different partition do if your entire
hard drive should experience a failure?

Think MVPs have the best answer if your PC can support it. Other answers
are you need software to create a partition in freespace on your current
hard drive, or shrink a current single partition for that purpose of
freespace. Which is appropriate is unknown to due lack of OP information.
Another is to get an onboard hard drive if you have an free connector on
scsi/ide. Again, which is appropriate is unknown due to lack of information
by OP. (OP : Original Post)

I agree with the other replies to get an external hard drive, but for your
question on software, you can use BootIT NG.
BootIT NG is not free, but a full featured demo can be downloaded and used
for 30 days.
BootIT NG from Terabyte

Download a free Knoppix ISO and burn it to CD. Then boot your computer with
it. You can then run qparted to create a new partition on your harddrive.
I'd suggest first defragging your existing drive.

Have fun.
