Parallel interface between two computers

I just bought another computer. I heard there is a way to connect them
together with an interface cable. Where can I get one and how do I use it.
I want to be able to copy files directly from the old computer to the new one
and there are some programs on the old computer that I do not have he
original software for. Any help would be appreciated.
 
Programs can not be transferred as you want. They must be installed on the
new system from the original media.

To connect two computers it is best to use a router similar to the Linksys
BEFSR41. You can connect up to four computers. They can all connect to the
internet independently of one another. And, it gives you a rudimentary
hardware firewall that keeps a lot of crap out of your systems.

If you knew as much as you think you know,
You would realize that you don't know what you thought you knew!
 
You could just take the HD from the old and install in the new as a slave.
Then when you install XP it will see the other HD and the programs and do
the necesary entries in the registry.
You can delete the old OS and its associated programs and be just fine that
way.

The classic program to do this is Laplink (ignoring BrooklynBridge
which I don't think exists anymore)

They have several products you might be interested in. You get a
special cable. I assume laplink products work over parallel, serial,
USB, and RJ-45 ethernet with the appropriate cables. I haven't used
it in many years.


When I help someone moje into a new computer I yank the disk out of
the old machine and pop it into the new machine, make a folder called
C:\OLDCDRIVE and xcopy the entire old disk to the new machine and then
put the old disk back. That way I know we've copied _everything_ if
the owner thinks he's missing some data later. After awhile I blow
away the OLDCDRIVE folder.

That may be true for Microsoft programs, but not all programs. I have
moved my Adobe programs several times to new drives and OSes without
reinstalling the programs. I just create the necessary shortcuts and
they run fine.
