looking for freeware to stitch together jpg files into panoramas, doesn't
need to be fancy 360 degree stuff but it does need to be able to handle
quite a few ( 6 to 10) 1mb to 3mb jpgs ...

I think 'Hugin' is by far the best one.

http://hugin.sourceforge.net/

If You want something less complicated I would suggest 'The Panorama
Factory'.

http://www.panoramafactory.com/download.html

From there You can find version 1.6 which is freeware.

Autostitch demo did an incredible job for a couple of trials I gave
it.

hugins shows promise but is too complicated for now - and a resource hungry
app, as is autostitch... though autostitch does a good job if you tweak the
settings... but I'm guessing it would be lots happier on a 3gigahertz P4
with a couple of gigs of RAM...

the one the did the best was the free edition of panofactory 1.6 ... and it
gets one curious as to how much better their current $59 app is...

also tried ULead's 360 but it's not freeware... when did they go to
Tiwan/Formosa ??

using photofilter to join images one-by-one is a non-automated solution if
you've got days to spend...

irfanview - i didn't know it had such a feature and it's not exactly a pano
tool - it just places your images side-by-side... nice to know it can do
that anyway even if it's not a real pano tool...

much thanks everbody... now i can go back to that panofactory 1.6 freeware
and get some work done...

Autostitch is the only piece of s/w I can not understand how it manages to
do what it does.
Have a go it will amaze you.
