My paint program will not run at all. When i try to start
it instantly it says that it has had an error. i've tried
to downlaod older paint programs to overwrite the broken
one and i've tried to replace it with the same paint file
from another XP i've most everything short of quick
restoring my computer does any one know of a patch or fix
i could download and use?

Go to Control Panel, open Add or Remove Programs. When the Add or Remove
Programs window opens, on the left side click: Add/Remove Windows
Components. When the next window opens click the Details button, and when
the next window opens click the Details button on that window. Scroll down
to Paint, if there is a checkmark to the left of it, click to remove that
checkmark, then click the OK buttons at the bottom of the two windows. Then
reboot your system, and repeat the same as above, this time adding the
checkmark to the left of Paint. That should fix things if there was any
corruption. In the event that there wasn't a checkmark to the left of
Paint, then it wasn't installed, just click to add the checkmark.

This can arise from corruption of the registry entries for Paint.
Uninstall it in Add/Remove Programs, Windows Components and uncheck
where it is buried in Accessories - Details. Then run regedit.exe, open
to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Applets\Paint
Highlight it and delete. Then reinstall Paint
