This might help you, though it isn't exactly what you
asked for.

Rather than have the pictures embedded in MS Word, use
the "include picture" field, and point to the picture. I
did this in a huge document with over 200 .jpg pictures,
and many tables, and some word-art, and at 250 pages the
size is down to 1.5 mb.

I have a large file that I had to break into 5 smaller
ones because there are so many screen shots and draw
objects. It needs to be kept as if it is one file.
I would like page x of y in the footer with y being the
total number of pages for all the documents. I have just
restarted x on each file to the correct number. Is there
a way to have Word calculate the total number of pages
for all documents and put it in the footer?

The 'pictures' are actually screen shots. I would have to save them in another file. since I already have 65 pages of them, it would be lots of work going back to try this. (I would have to copy them out and save them elsewhere and then put in include picture). Also, I have circles and squares around parts of them so I'm not sure it would even work. Thanks anway.

If you save as html, you will get your pictures saved as separate files.
Still a lot of work to put them back in.

Suzan you can look at your report, look at your sixty five
eight-by-ten colour glossy pictures with circles and arrows
and a paragraph on the back of each one, and look at your
report. And then at your sixty five eight-by-ten colour
glossy pictures with circles and arrows and a paragraph
on the back of each one and begin to cry, 'cause this
is a typical case of American blind justice, and there
ain't nothin' you can do about it, and Word ain't goin'
to let you group in one file the sixty five eight-by-ten
colour glossy pictures with the circles and arrows and
a paragraph on the back of each one explaining what each
one is to be used as.

Came to talk about "include picture" field.

You've been told how you can link to the picture and the
picture will get injected, inspected, detected, infected,
neglected and selected; you've been told how to get your
pictures saved as separate files; what's the problem?
Your document will look the same - it's not as if you'll
get all kinds o' mean nasty ugly things sitting right
there on the line next to your picture. Your groovy
formatting will be safe - your file will just be smaller.

yours sincerely
