I'm trying to create a document that has two colums in some places.
(However, I did not format it in two colums, I just made the colums by using
the 'tab' button.) When I type in the left hand colum, the right colum moves.
How do I stop text from moving all around?

Honestly? It's much easier to use a template with two columns.
 
Create a blank slide and then go to Format > Slide Layout and choose the layout
that has two columns - - it's called "Title and 2-column Text". Now you can
type your text in.
