Page Numbering large document

We use Word 2003 in Windows XP and/or 2000. We write manuals for our software
and need a page numbering solution. For example, let's say we add five new
pages between pages 3 and 4 of Chapter 1. This causes the remaining pages to
be renumbered. However, we don't want to have to reprint all the pages from 4
to the end of Chapter 1 just because the page numbers have now changed. We
would like to be able to maybe number the inserted pages as 1.3.0 (original
page 3), 1.3.1 (first page inserted after page 3), 1.3.2, 1.3.3, 1.3.4,
1.3.5, and 1.4.0 (original Page 4). The "1" at the beginning indicates the
chapter. I have already set up a template that is numbering the pages with
the chapter number according to the Heading 1 style used on the chapter name.
I am using section breaks to control the header and footers for each chapter.
It is the numbering for the inserted pages that I can't figure out. I am not
the one who will be working with the manuals, so I am needing an easy
solution, if possible. My fellow employees are saying we need to abandon Word
2003 for a different program designed speciically for typing large manuals,
but I'm not ready to give up on Word yet. I would appreciate any suggestions
you can give.
