Page numbering across several documents

(Using Word 2002 in Office XP. All updates etc in place.)

My wife is working on a novel that consists of eight sections, each one in
its own file "novel1", "novel2", ... "novel8". The novel's page numbering is
consecutive thorough all eight parts. For example if the last page of part 1
is "123", the first page of part 2 is "124" and on into the other files. The
way I did this was to start the page numbering in each new part by actually
inserting the incremented number: Insert > Page number > Format > Start at.
It seemed like an acceptable solution at the time but now it's causing a
problem in the editing stage. She's already made changes in the first part
that have changed (reduced) the number of pages, which means that all of the
page numbering in the other parts is wrong. This problem is likely to become
even worse as the editing process continues.

I've looked at "creating master documents" in Word Help and it didn't make
much sense. Is there some other way to get Word to pick up the last page
number of a designated document and use it+1 as the first page number of
another document?

number across them.

But the best thing might be to eventually combine all of the files into one
document.

Thanks Doug. I thought it would involve fields and I was right:

This should all be on a single line, I suppose.

It won't matter if it Wordwraps when entering the field construction, but it
must not be split by the use of either Shift+Enter or Enter.
