page number is inactive

page number is inactive

I want to insert page number, but when I go to insert page number and I go on
for instance "bottom of page", there is no option I can choose from. I really
do not know what has happened to my MS word. any suggestions?

What does "go on 'bottom of page'" mean?

Which version of Word?

Insert a Footer in your document, put the cursor in it, and then
choose Insert Pge Number.
 
Does this happen with all documents or just with a particular one?

Which version of Word are you using?
 
I believe the OP is referring to an option in the Insert | Page Numbers
dialog box (of Word 97-2003). In Word 2007, you can see this dialog box by if
you run the InsertPageNumbers command via the Macros dialog box.
