I receive the page cannot be displayed message for 2 sites - ebay and
hotmail. This error is on only one computer that is sharing an internet
connection. Other computers on this connection are fine. If I connect the
computer directly to the dsl modem (SBC Yahoo), it works fine. The problem
is only behind the router, but the other computers behind the router are
fine. I have tried renaming hosts to old hosts, I have run spybot and virus
scans, I have run the winsock fix utility, I have run the regsvr32
urlmon.dll, I have set all explorer options to default, deleted temporary
files and cookies, I have run
"http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/reg/IE_Default_Browser.reg" and don't know
what to try next. I am running XP Home.

Check for a file named HOSTS with no extension (not Hosts.sam). It may be a
hidden file. Open it with Notepad and remove any line referencing the site.
Or, rename HOSTS to OLDHOSTS

To CPAChris: I have a very similar problem where I get either a pg cannot be
displayed or it takes me to the wrong page. I disabled my firewalls (in my
case Norton) and I was able to view the page. My MOTHER had a similar
problem and I disabled her firewalls (in her case ZoneAlarm and/or Windows
Firewall) and she was able to display the page. Try it and let me know if it
worked. FYI - I was on a DSL w/Router like you and ran all sorts of stuff to
get it to work -- amazing. TJ

Both my mother and I have very similar problems to yours...I disabled the
firewalls (Her's was ZoneAlarm and/or Windows Firewall, mine was Norton) and
I was able to have the page load. After I was done in that site, I
reactivated my firewalls. Try it and let me know if it works.

'Chris',

The poster on alt.windows-xp (2|ll|04 03.37) has an identical problem to
you in as much that he too cannot open just two sites - Hotmail and
Ebay.

Emrys Davies.

I and my mother have very similar problems, page not displayed or wrong page
displayed. I turned off firewalls (mine was Norton, hers was ZoneAlarm
and/or Windows Firewall) and was able to display the pages. After I was
finished in that site I reactivated the firewalls. Try it!

Has anyone come up with a solution yet? It seems only microsoft sites can't
be accessed (msn, hotmail, msnbc and microsoft)

Thanks

Internet connection sharing shares only some common tcp ports. So if the web
sites has links or otherwise uses non-standard ports like in url
http://www.non-existing:888/index.html, they do not work. They work if pc is
directly connected to internet. You can try to find out which port is that
is not shared and see if that port could be also shared. I don't like
internet connection sharing jus because of these problems. Better solution
is to have external router or possible combined adsl router depending on
your internet connection.

You shouldn't have to disable the firewall. You should be able to add that
site to your acceptable sites. In ZA you will find it in the Privacy Tab.
