I have packed a presentation with sound using PowerPoint 2000 on a Windows
XP platform with the viewer and linked files. I burnt this to a CD. If I
put the CD on a system that has Windows XP I can hear the sound. If I try
to play it on a Windows 98 platform the presentation plays but NO SOUND.

Any suggestions. Person I created it for has Windows 98. I did test their
ability to play the sound file on the system using their media player and
does work.

Help Please - this is a Birthday presentation required for Tuesday!!

Sonia:

I had read this article prior to posting. The sound file will play on the
Windows 98 system, it just won't play from the PowerPoint presentation
packed with the viewer. When I burnt the CD, I burnt both the presentation
file and the music file directly from the same folder on the C:\ to the CD
to avoid breaking links. The presentation was not moved after the music was
inserted to a different location prior to burning the CD.

Any more suggestions would be appreciated.

I understand. That's why I pointed you to the MCI settings and the codec
information. PowerPoint doesn't use the Windows Media Player. If you want
to test whether PowerPoint can play the file, go to Start > Run and type
mplayer.exe and click OK. Then open the sound file. If it doesn't play
then it won't play in PowerPoint or the Viewer. That is most likely because
the MCI settings have been modified or the needed codec is not installed on
the system.
