P2P Wiring; how long?

Is there a limit for how long a cross over cable can be for P2P networking. I have heard that at most it should be 10 meters for it to work efficiently. Is this true? I have calculated that i need at least 18 meters. Can I stretch it that extra 8 meters or will I face some severe problems????
