Overwriting spaces

In Word 2000 on win 98 system & Word 2003 on XP Pro system; I am not able to
overwrite the spaces to the left of a column of closing parentheses on a Doc
template with anything but more spaces. Anything else pushes the parentheses
at the end of the line further to the right. I have tried replacing the
spaces with the space symbol to no avail. Toggling the insert key activates
overwrite mode but it does not work. I want the column of closing
parentheses to remain as a vertical diving line.

I suspect you need to place the parentheses with tab stops and tabs.

I have tried that but then I am unable to enter text in the area to the left
of the closing perentheses. I cannot place the curser in the "blank" area".
Thanks for your timely reply.

You can enter text to the left of a right-aligned tab, but if you need it to
be at a specific location (other than next to the parens), then you need to
set a separate tab stop for it.
