"Overwriting".....help!

Is it possible to have the overwriting area fixed, in size? I need to fix the numer of charecters..in the overwriting area, so that I can not type more than a certain number of characters..and then stop! Does anyone have a solution for me??
 
There are two typing modes - insert or overwrite. They are all or nothing.
If you want to limit the amount of text you can enter, use a table cell of
fixed proportions.

You can lock the width from table > autofit > fixed column width
You can lock the height from Table > table properties > row > specify an
exact height.
