overheating? limit cpu usage?

Hello all,

I'm using a notebook (i guess a crappy one) with xp home sp2 intel p4 2.2ghz
512mb ram and whenever I use a processor intensive program my notebook
shutsdown. I guessing this is overheating protection. I already use one of
those laptop cooler fans which prolongs my usage but doesn't prevent these
crashes.

My question is: are there any settings I can change in xp home to stop this
from happening? eg. limit/throttle cpu usage to 80% in order to avoid
overheating?

any help is appreciated.

thanks.

I just had another thought, would removing my battery help at all? I'm not
sure, i'm just typing out loud.

XP has no such settings that I am aware of, but your system BIOS might.
Heat-sensitive CPU throttling is a more common feature on Server mainboards,
but since it makes perfect sense in laptops; I think chances are fair that
yours may have the feature as well.

thanks for your prompt reply. I have browsed my bios and it is quite
limiting. I cannot even get the temperature of my cpu from my bios.

This is the news I didn't want but thanks :(

Intel provides a program called Active Monitor that stays
in the System Tray and monitors voltages and thermals on
the PC. I would go to Intel's site and get that and install it.
Also, you can use Everest Home edition to monitor the
same sensors. You should also check your System and
Application logs for any Error or Warning messages. Heat
may be a factor, but an abrupt shutdown shouldn't happen
unless you've got marginal hardware that can't stand a
sudden/high CPU spike or stress on the machine.

If you want to try and monitor the temperature give SpeedFan a try.
Works well on my Toshiba laptop.

speeds, temperatures and voltages in computers with hardware
monitoring chips.

I went to the intel website and downloaded the active monitor as you
suggested however it appears I cannot install this because I don't have a
"computer based on an intel motherboard". This is the message I recieved
during installation.

I checked the event viewer in administrative tools and I didn't not find any
notable logs.

again thanks for your wonderful suggestions however i've had no luck so far.
I will continue to investigate.

Try unplugging the power adapter and running the laptop from the
battery when you are using this program.

Most laptops drop the CPU into "low gear" when running on battery so
as to prolong the battery life.

Good luck

After sticking his head out from his XP firewall, Drew28 had this to say:

Then go and see whether MBM5 will work with your system. You can find it
