Overheating Laptop

I have about a year old Dell Inspiron 2650. From the
beginning it has had a problem of overheating. The
cooling fan is placed underneath the laptop. It seems to
me that is a bad place for a cooling fan. After working
on the laptop for 30 min or longer, the performance goes
down tremendously and the fan comes on and will go on and
off till the computer is shut down.

Any suggestions? I have contacted Dell but they haven't
offered much help.

Make sure that the laptop is operated on a hard surface so as not to
restrict the air flow. Your lap is not ideal!

Jason,
I have been having the same problem with my HP laptop.
The only thing I've been able to get is that the computer
might be using alot of resources. It happens only when I
run certain programs. The fan will start running real
high and then it shuts down after a few minutes. I'm
curious to see what responses you get.

1. Blow out any dust that has accumulated in the fan wells at the
bottom of the laptop (it can build up pretty quickly).
2. Check your power management profile. There should be a high power
setting as well as a 'quiet' mode and maybe others.
