Overbars in Word are very clumsy method to implement

I use WORD to write product definition documents for integrated circuits. A
common issue that I have is the use of overbars (like an underline, but over
the word rather than under it) - which are used to indicate logical negation.
There is no graceful way to implement these in Word - I can do it using the
equation editor, but the word with the overbar should be treated like normal
text, which equations are not.
