Hi don't know if anyone can help but I have a problem
with my Outlook Express, it removes ALL attachemnts as
unsafe even when I know I have sent them from secure
enviroments such as stuff I have created at work - anyone
got any ideas how I can resolve this ( It didn't used to
do it)

Thanks

in advance

Samantha,

Start Outlook Express.
.. On the Tools menu, click Options.
.. Click the Security tab, click to clear the Do not allow attachments to be
saved or opened that could potentially be a virus check box under Virus
Protection, and then click OK.

To better protect yourself from viruses, its a good idea to leave this
option checked unless you definitely want to open the attachment.

Another way to help protect yourself from email viruses infecting your
computer if you use Outlook Express is to disable the Preview Pane. There
are certain viruses that will infect a computer even if you just preview the
message. To disable the preview pane:

Start Outlook Express
.. Click on View, Layout
.. Uncheck the Show Preview Pane, and then click OK.

samantha:
To disable this feature, open Outlook Express; click Tools>Options>Security.
Uncheck "Do Not Allow Attachments..." and click OK.

.
One work around for files known to be from a good source
is to rename files to a different extension such as
changeing file name "filename.exe to filename.xxx". You
can see the blocked extensions by typing file extensions
in the help dialog box and avoid the blocked extensions

It could be the types of files you're using as
attachments. I was having the same problem with MSN8
(SUCKS) when I would send myself attachments from my work
station to my home computer using OUTLOOK. The firewalls
that are inplace will reject certain files as "harmful"
if they have specific extentions on them (i.e. .exe and
about 120 others). For MSN 8 (SUCKS) I had to log out of
MSN 8 (SUCKS) and use their Passport system to be able to
download my own files. I guess Passport doesn't have the
same 'security' on it as MSN 8 (SUCKS). See if OUTLOOK
has something similiar.

Hope it helps.

I forgot to say that you will need to rename the file to
the original extension once the file is on your hard
disk. If it is a file from someone else you will need to
coordinate with them on the file renaming.

Ok, You know that yousent them from a "secure enviroment". But, How is
Outlook Express to know that? Oe is set to automatically remove
atttachments because too many new users don't know enpugh to protect
themselves from malicous e-mail, As evidenced by all the "Microsoft
Security Patches" that are still flooding peoples inboxes.

This function was turned on by one of the latest patches from Windows
Update.

This security function is easy to turn off. Simply goto Tools>Options>
Security and uncheck "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that
could potentially be a virus check box" in the vius protection area.
