Hi:

Maybe this is a problem specific to my video driver, but when I try to
ouput to S-Video on my television, it shows the background desktop but
no programs that are running. Any idea why this could be the case? I'm
using Windows XP with the latest service pack, and a fairly new HP
DV4000 laptop.

Thanks,
Kayda

You probably need to configure the "second monitor" ie your tv set.

Right-click Desktop > Properties > Settings (tab) [> Advanced...]

What you click from then on will depend on your video driver, but look for
something like "clone" mode, if you want the tv set to mirror what is on
your main monitor.

A stream cannot rise above its source

The reason I decided to write that, was mainly because "Kayda"

Kayda it sounds like you are seeing an extended desktop only for use with
dual monitors. You need to make some settings in your display properties
here are a couple of websites that help with making the proper selections.

http://support.gateway.com/support/manlib/Desktops/Updates/8507474/07474.htm

http://www.svideo.com/compaq1700.html

They both have some helpful tips that should get you to where you can use
this properly. Also if niether of these helps. You may have a dropdown box
when you get to: Display properties > Settings that lets you choose which
video output to use as the number 1 monitor that may change it over to your
s-video as your main desktop instead of extended. Good Luck and post back
with results or more questions.
