Hi All, we have a problem with our newly installed Outlook
2003 clients connecting to our Exchange Servers.

Here is our current configuration:
Client:
Microsoft XP Pro SP1
Office Outlook 2003 (11.5608.5703)

Server:
4 x Exchange 2003 Enterprise Version 6.5 (Build 6944.4), 2
Storage Groups per Server, 2 Message Stores per Storage
Group.
Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP4
Exchange is running in a mixed 5.5/2003 environment with
all users/public folders/etc... moved over to the 2003
servers. The Active Directory Connector has been
removed. The 5.5 servers are only around now in case we
had to roll back from 2k3(we will cut to native soon).

AD:
Active Directory is Windows 2000.

Here is the problem:
Every so often Outlook 2003 displays a popup containing
the following:
"Outlook is trying to retrieve data from the Microsoft
Exchange server <FQDN Server Name>."
This server name could be either the Exchange server that
the users mailbox is located on or one of the GC servers.
The message lasts for 10 - 15 seconds during which the
user is forced to wait until the popup closes. This
problem most often occurs when the user is attempting to
send a message; however there are cases were it happens
during regular browsing of the mailbox. I have verified
that DNS resolution is working correctly and that the
clients can communicate with both the Exchange server and
the GC. I found a Microsoft KB article Q824118. This
article however was rather vague on how one could resolve
the problem and did not really offer any useful
information. The only interesting information I've been
able to find regarding this problem has been a network
capture while one of our users got the message. When the
Exchange connection goes "wonkey" a number of MAPI
requests and replies are sent to and from the Client to
the Exchange server with an "Operation: unknown?! (10)"
status. These packets flood through for about 3 to 5 sec
before trailing off. Please also note that Outlook 2000
clients do not have this problem (simple MAPI?).

Any comments, suggestions or information regarding this
issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Mark

That dialog box did not exist prior to Outlook XP.

If the Exchange server name in the dialog box is specified as the NetBIOS
name, it's usually a server performance or a network congestion issue. If it
is the FQDN name, as you are seeing, it's usually a client configuration
issue.

Thanks for your reply. Is there usually a particular
setting that is causes it or is it just a matter of
blowing away and recreating the MAPI profile?

Thanks
Mark

If it is a client configuration issue, what needs be reconfigured

Thanks
