i cannot access my email from outlook....
Oh, yeah, that told us a lot of specifics regarding the error. How
could anyone troubleshooting your problem without ANY details, like
Outlook version, OS version, error message, type of e-mail account, if
it worked before or never has, etc?
Does that mean you created the account (which is up on the mail server)?
Or you defined an account's setup inside of Outlook to tell it how to
use that account up on the server?
and used http
for hotmail....
Is that the account type you defined in Outlook? Or is that the access
method you used to visit Hotmail's web pages in your browser?
outook will not import my messages from hotmail...
Microsoft dumped HTTP/WebDAV access to Hotmail accounts many years ago
for freebie accounts. You needed a paid Plus account to access your
account using that access method. Microsoft then dumped WebDAV and
changed to HTTP/Deltasync. You can get access to a freebie account
using Deltasync but WebDAV access is dead.
No version of Outlook supports Deltasync (they all support only WebDAV).
You have to download and install the Outlook Connector add-on from
Microsoft. This add-on provides Deltasync support for Hotmail accounts
(for HTTP access). Accounts are defined by the add-on because only it
supports Deltasync. Did you do that yet?
Do you really need to use HTTP to access your Hotmail account? The
advantage of HTTP/Deltasync is that it gives you IMAP-like access to
your Hotmail account (i.e., you get to manage more than just the Inbox
folder and local and server folders remain in sync). However, you need
to use an e-mail client that support Deltasync protocol. Outlook
doesn't without the add-on. Outlook Express won't ever support it
(since it is a dead product). Windows [Live] Mail support Deltasync. I
haven't heard of any non-Microsoft e-mail clients that include Deltasync
support (those that say they support Hotmail accounts do so through HTTP
to screen-scrape their navigation through the web site so they are
dependent on the web pages not changing). If you don't need Deltasync
access to your Hotmail account, use POP. Microsoft dropped POP/SMTP
access somewhere around 5 years ago but they re-added in back in
February. That means you can define a POP account in Outlook to access
your Hotmail (but you'll only see the Inbox since POP has no concept of
folders).
If you use Outlook as your e-mail client, you have 2 choices on how to
access your Windows Live Hotmail account:
- For IMAP-like access, install the Outlook Connector add-on. Use the
add-on to define accounts using the Deltasync protocol.
- For POP/SMTP access, read:
