My customer is about to have a conniption fit regarding
this issue... and i'm upset since i can't resolve it. here
goes.

when the customer sends a message in outlook, it sends the
message to the outbox, and then attempts to send it through
the SMTP server. Outlook returns with an error saying it
could not contact the SMTP server and was unable to send
the message. normally i would think nothing of this and
have the user try to send again. however, the message
actually DOES get sent. therefore, all outgoing emails
build up in the outbox and every time there's an error, it
attempts to resend any messages in the outbox - resulting
in many copies of the same message sent. does anyone here
have any idea what's going on here?

to give further insight, we migrated this account from
another computer that the user previously used. instead of
copying the .pst file, i did an import from one file to the
existing one since he needed the contents of both. i then
added his email account to the list of those to be checked.

my thoughts are that there's 2 potential problems: 1)
outlook is somehow misconfigured 2) the smtp server is
suffering from schitzofrenia.

the same smtp user is used by all the users on the network
though, and this user is the only one suffering this problem.

any input would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!

Tim..

I had a similar issue with a user after we made some changes on our server.
I found that the users profile was corrupt. After a reconfigurre of outlook
did not help, I completely deleted users profile folder , and created a new
one, and then reconfigured his outlook .. and it started working fine...!

one big difference here though was we were using Exchange server and not an
SMTP server.

Hope this helps.
venky.
