Intermittently, Outlook will not open. I do and ctl-alt-
del and there is nothing listed in Applications. However
under the Processes tab, there are multple sessions of
outlook.exe running. When I "end process" on a few of
them, then Outlook will open . The next time I open
Outlook, it wants to open in safe mode. Anyone have any
info on this?

I am having the same problem. I have only noticed it since going to Office 2003. When I installed I received a message indicating a .pdf file was inuse and the office install could not continue. I had no applications running so I tried retry and finally selected ignore. I didn't think to look at the processes. When I reboot, there was no outlook shortcut on my desktop so I put one there and started outlook. When I tried to start outlook a second time, It would not start, so I reran the Office 2003 with a repair. It completed successfully. But outlook will not start. When I look in the processes running there are multiple instances of outlook running. If I end all outlook processes, it will then start, but always leaving a process running and consequently not start again without a manual end of the process. I have put on all 2003 updates. I would be interested to know what the problem is.

The only reason for outlook not to close is that there is a program or addin
running that needs outlook open.
I have an organiser connected and when I plug it in this starts outlook in
hidden mode. If I select Outlook from my desktop it will then appear
visibly.
If I shut outlook it will vanish but in reality it is still running as long
as the organiser is connected.

Going through the other processes to identify anything related to outlook
would help. When the program causing this shuts outlook should shut, but you
have to take care and identify the process first.
