Outlook will not start and other things

No sure where to start here. I am trying to fix a PC with Outlook 2002 that
seems to have a mind of its own. Like today it refuses to start at all. I
get the logo screen with an hour glass and that's it. Task manager says
"Not Responding" . Wait a few minutes and then shut it down via TM and then
start again, this time a message "failed to start correctly last time -
start in safe mode?" Click OK, same thing - logo screen plus hour glass and
again TM says "not responding". Sometimes I gat an error on starting
Outlook that offers to run the Repair tool. I do that and it runs through
an Office install procedure and apparently nothing more.

Odd thing is that it was behaving this way last week and (clutching at
straws) ran a defrag whereupon it ran quite well for several days, and now
it's back to it's old self.

System is Presario notebook 2100, WinXP Home SP1, MS Office 2002 SP 1 & 2,
192Mb ram. .pst file is 1.3Gb and I suspect this may be the root of the
problem, but of course I cannot get Outlook to start in order to do some
house-keeping. Catch-22.

The problem is with Outlook as other programs including Outlook Express run
quite well.

I have un-installed re-installed MS Office
run scanpst (which found minor inconsistencies - nothing to worry about)
updated and ran a/v (which found and cleaned the NACHI.A trojan)
examined the running tasks list and found nothing odd.

What I didn't try, and I don't have access to the machine for about a week,
is to move the huge pst file away and have Outlook create a brand new (and
tiny) Outlook.pst. That should indicate whether the huge size of the pst
file is the problem.

Anyone got any other clues I could pursue?

Cheers,
Brodie

P.S. I also deleted the outcmd file last week - not sure if it may be back
and possibly corrupted again.

I think you're on the right track by trying to create a new PST. 1.3GB is
usually the limit when folks start to see goofy behavior.

Another thing to try is to run a CHKDSK /F
XP will complain it needs to reboot to run this, so reboot. Once finished,
run SCANPST again, but this time do it about three times. You need to keep
running it until it goes all the way through without finding anything.

Thanks for the tips Patrick - I will try them next week when I again get
access to the computer.

Cheers,

I am having a similar problem, but I don't understand all
of your 'fixes'. My Outlook is moving INCREDIBLY slow
these days. I can see my inbox emails in the preview pane,
but when I click on them to open them, it takes a very
long time for them to open, if they open at all. I usually
have to shut down the program with TM. I have switched
over (temporarily, I hope) to Express, which is working
fine, but I need to use Outlook since it is has all my
contacts and calendar information.

Any ideas what I should do? I am running Windows 2000 and
XP on a laptop with a Pentium III.

Thanks,
Lori

In Outlook, select Tools | Options | Other, and uncheck the option to enable
instant messaging integration. When finished, select OK and restart Outlook.
