Outlook will not retain passwords

So far I have run the detect & repair utility, put in
passwords in program umpteen times, and taken a look at
the registry. Nothing helps. I have used the program for
years and suddenly is refuses to save any server passwords
even though the box is checked. Sometimes it appears to,
but if you leave a particular email setup dialog and come
back, the line is blank again. Does anyone know what might
be happening?

There have been several recent issues with passwords not being retained with
Outlook. If you're running Outlook 2002, the SP1 solves many of these, so
start there. If not, here are some other solutions:

For Outlook 2000 or 2002 on Win 98, NT, or 2000:

For Outlook 2000 on Windows 2000:

(IMO) http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q259416

For all Outlook versions on Windows XP (note, this article is written for OE
but the solution applies to Outlook as well. Just ignore the parts that
refer to OE):

Thanks for trying to help but the article was poorly
written. Usually I can make minor edits to the registry
with no problem, but this talks about deleting user keys
without identifying which ones they are or which ones to
delete. I found four folders, two of which were
labeled "default" and none of which seemed to relate to my
accounts or profiles. Several had long stings of numbers
which I presure are the "user keys".

We have 4 pop3 accounts we pick up on this machine, and 4
user profiles which share folders, though I am the only
one who uses outlook (I set up outlook express on the
other three profiles so they would not need outlook.) Like
I said, none of them seemed to relate at all to the
profiles I have - only one (mine) had a recognizable name.
But that one had NO stings of numbers at all.
