Hey, I don't want to start the NY nagging, but MS Outlook is driving me up
the wall. It opens up, then hangs and whitish squares come up. Often it
freezes everything else up. On a "bright day", it lets me close it down via
Task Manager.
I have tried:
* Disabling MS Messenger auto log-in
* Detect & repair MS Office
* Boot to Safe Mode
* Unistalled all MS Office and reinstalled. (Outlook is the only application
that hangs).
Nothing seems to make it smile.
---------------------------------
* Version MS Office2002 Suite
* OS WinXP pro SP2 (plse don't blame SP2: Outlook acted this
way in the remote past)
* Norton SysWorks2005
* Cable Internet connection.

Hi,

Try disabling Norton's email scanning.

I'll be happy to supply more details if requested.

Looking forward for a brighter Outlook
Thanks

If you are using some kind of Anti-Apam software, like something from Symantec, disable it. Also, follow the other suggestion of disabling any specific email virus scanning.

If neither of those suggestions improves things immediately, open up task manager and sort the process list by CPU usage with highest use on top. Now try opening Outlook and see what floats to the top of your Task Manager list. Post the top five processes here.

Thanks (Rick & Carl): Outlook is literally flying now as if freed from some
heavy weight! I disabled Symantec's email options and Outlook no longer
crashes.
But does that not leave it exposed to Virus threats? I have kept Norton
Internet security running though - but this applies to trojan port attacks,
right?

Personally, I've never used any kind of email/attachment virus scanner. Also, Outlook includes a feature that will block you from accessing potentially harmful attachments (unless they are zipped or the extensions are changed).

Basically, following the practice of simply not opening unexpected email attachments is the best security you can have. However, if you still don't trust yourself or your InBox, always save any attachments you wish to open, right-click them, and scan them for viruses with Symantec.

I wouldn't bother re-enabling the email scanning.

Hi,

Yes, just manually scan any files you recieve before opening them.
