Outlook Thinks It's Off-line

Outlook always thinks it's offline, when it's really online (Verizon DSL). As
a result, when I try to send emails, they go to the Outbox and stay there
until I hit Send/Receive. When I hit Send/Receive, they are sent immediately.
Outlook also receives emails as they arrive and Microsoft Messenger works
fine. There is an Outlook Icon in my systray telling me that my computer is
offline (which it isn't). I am using a current version of Outlook and XP
Professional. Fiddeling with the icon doesn't help. Does anyone have any
ideas that I can try to correct this?

Thanks for your help

John,

I'm assuming that you're NOT connecting to an Exchange Server --- that
you're using POP3 or IMAP E-mail accounts.

On the File menu, there's a command "Work Offline". If that command has a
check mark next to it, Outlook uses the Send/Receive settings for "When
Outlook is Offline" instead of the settings for "When Outlook is Online"
(I'm using the terminology from Outlook 2002). However, for either Online or
Offline mode, you should be able to configure Outlook to schedule an
automatic send/receive at regular intervals (for example, every 5 minutes).

You stated that messages are received "as they arrive" which would appear to
indicate that Outlook is doing scheduled send/receive operations. If so, you
may find that, while messages you send are in the Outbox for several
minutes, they DO get sent eventually (and move to Sent Items).

If you want messages to be sent immediately, instead of waiting for the next
schedule send/receive, go to "Tools", "Options", "Mail Setup" and put a
check in the "Send immediately when connected" checkbox. However, you might
want to think twice about doing this --- if outgoing messages are sent
immediately, you don't have any opportunity to change your mind, or to
recover if you hit "Send" accidentally. Personally, I very much prefer to
have the extra step of manually clicking on "Send/Receive".

Michael,
You solved my problem. It was the "Work Offline". As soon as I unchecked it,
Outlook started to send emails instantly. Thank you so much for your help :)
