Outlook shutting down...

I have MS Office 2000 installed on my 2-year-old Windows XP system at home.
I have the same software installed on a 6-year-old Windows XP system at work.
Lately, whenever I attempt to open Outlook on each of these PC's I get a
message telling me that Oulook has encountered a problem and needs to shut
down. I send the error report and the results dialogue box points me to a web
page telling me to consider an upgrade to Outlook 2007. So I downloaded the
trial version of Office 2007 Pro to one of my PC's and installed it...
Outlook 2007 does the same exact thing as the Outlook 2000 did.
Can anyone help me with this issue?
Any time spent on this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Possibly, but not limited to; an antivirus app intergrated with OL, a
corrupt pst file, and addin or other app accessing the pst, eg fax app or
desktop search app.
Initially run scanpst.exe, the repair tool, on your pst (with OL closed)
Check the size of the pst (the old format pst has a size limitation,
problems can occur at 1.6gb)
When you installed the trial, it may have continued to use your old pst.
Using the mail applet create a new data file, set as default, close old data
file. See how this performs.

My problem is similar but not exactly the same. Multiple incidences of
Outlook 2007 are running in task manager. The only way I can shut the
program down is to go to task manager and shut down each incident of the
process. Is there an options somewhere that allows multiple incidents and is
there a way to turn it off?

This is an indication that some add-in is interfering with the correct
shutdown of the Outlook process. Start Outlook once with the /safe command
switch and see if the problem still occurs.

Thanks Brian. That worked. I started removing add-ins from the registry
because I couldn't remove them with the checkboxes. I kept add-ins I knew
had worked in the past and removed three others. Outlook appears to be
shutting down correctly.
