Outlook randomlly not marking messages as Read or Replied

Just installed Office XP on a machine and did all the updates and
patches.

It randomally will not mark messages read and when I reply will not
give the reply arrow. Sometimes it works somtimes it doesn't work. The
e-mail can be frome the same person or different person. Any ideas as
to why?

What type of accounts are we talking about? If Hotmail, those icons
will not show.
