Hello,

I get two error messages when trying to open my Outlook 2000 .pst file. My
computer crashed and I had to reinstall everything. I had saved a native copy
of my .pst and get the following error messages:

Message 1: Properties for this information service must be defined prior to
use. (then I click OK)

Message 2: The file c:\Documents and Settings\Marshall\My
Documents\outlook.pst is not a personal folders file.

I checked to make sure the file is not marked ad read-only. It's not. Help!
Thanks in advance.

How?

You have a Personal Folders service defined that does not point to a file
Outlook recognizes as a PST.
Message 2: The file c:\Documents and Settings\Marshall\My
Documents\outlook.pst is not a personal folders file.

Does that file exist? How did it get there? Did you overwrite one PST with
another of the same name?

Hi Brian,

The pst is a backup copy. The reason I'm trying to restore it is that my pc
crashed and this is the pst I had copied onto a CD before the crash from the
standard location. After a computer tech reinstalled my software onto a new
hard drive, I copied the file from the CD back to the original location,
tried to open it and got the error messages.

Again, did you overwrite a PST of the same name? That is guaranteed to
cause trouble in Outlook. Second, did you remove the read-only attribute
after you put the PST back on hard disk?

This was a fresh install of Outlook on a new hard drive. This was my first
time using Outlook on the new computer so if there was already a default pst
there it would have been overwritten when I copied my backup file the default
directory.
And yes, I did look at the read-only attribute. It is not set as read-only.

And if there was, you corrupted your mail profile. Did you try creating a
new one?
