Outlook .pst file - size issues

It appears that the .pst file keeps growing and growing
and growing. Even after "emptying" my deleted items
folder (which had about 400 messages in it) the size of
my .pst file stayed the same. Can anyone tell me how I
can reduce the size of it...without archiving? Again,
you'd think that if you got rid of mail, it would get
smaller, but that's not the case.

Thanks,

Greg

PSTs do not reclaim space properly on their own. Right click the top level
folder and choose properties. Click the Advanced button. Click the Compact
Now button. Do this three times. Som,etimes the first time isn't enough to
get all the unused space out of the file.

Nope - Outlook will not give space back to the file system when messages are
removed. You have to compact the PST file to recover space. However,
depending on the size of the PST, you may not recover very much.

From the folder list, right-click on the top-level folder and select
Properties | Advanced | Compact Now.

I tried this three times, and then again three times, and the a third time
three times and my .PST file only went down from 340mb to 328mb.

Any other ideas? Thanks--------

Right click on the top level folder. Choose properties. Click the Folder
Size button. That will tell you what folders have large sizes. The
compaction did reduce the size of the PST. So I'd say you probably just have
some big attachments in there or lots of messages. See what looking at the
sizes of the folders tells you. You might find one folder or two that have a
very large size with some large items in them.
