Outlook *.pst File Disappeared

I'm running Outlook 2003 on a Windows XP Home SP 2 machine. The other day, I
received a message saying that there were critical Microsoft updates to
install. I clicked on the yellow Shield icon to download the updates, but
nothing seemed to download/install. The next day, I opened up my Outlook and
it said that the file
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst could not be found.

I went into Windows explorer, told it to show hidden files and to show
protected operating system files, and looked for the *.pst file in the
specified directory. There was no *.pst file there. I searched my entire
hard-drive for any *.pst files. No pst files were found. The file seems to
have vanished into thin air.

Has anybody run into this problem before? What causes it, and how can I get
my pst file back??

Check your Quarantine folder of your virus scanner. Some virus scanners dump
the whole file when a virus e-mail gets downloaded into the pst-file. In
this case it's best to either exclude the pst-file from being scanned or use
an incoming mail scan.

Tips of the month:
-What do the Outlook Icons Mean?
-Create an Office 2003 CD slipstreamed with Service Pack 1

I just checked. It's not there either. And there's nothing in the virus log
showing that anything was done with a *.pst file; quarantined or deleted.
That was a good suggestion though. I hadn't even thought of checking the
quarantine folder.

You're welcome but I don't think it's possible to recover your pst-file
unless you have made a backup. I can't determine what has caused this. Maybe
you can find anything regarding this in the Event Viewer.
