A friend has a problem sync'ing with his Palm all of a sudden. For some
reason, Outlook Express has taken over and he cannot sync his Contacts with
Outlook.

He is getting this error:

"Unable to initialise the mail system. Please check your configuration"
plus other errors.

I was going to reinstall Outlook but we didn't have the disks available. I
tried to reinstall Palm but again we had a problem - similar, in that it
could not find the email client.

Before I reinstall - any thoughts on what this could be?

It syncs with no problem with Outlook Express.

Is Outlook, not Express, the default mail client under Control
Panel->Internet Options-Programs? It is required.

Following on from this, I have now reinstalled (ran 'Detect and Repair)
Outlook and all is well as far as no further error messages and unwanted
sync'ing with OE. I have also reinstalled the Palm software and reconnected
to Outlook rather than OE.

However, we still cannot sync with Contacts. We're not getting any errors
and the Address Book is sync'ing - but not the Contacts.

We have another program called 'Key Contacts' which I also use. This allow
sync'ing of multiple folders. This works fine and the Palm is sync'ing the
Contacts folder but not otherwise.

Usually, he sync's with both Key Contacts and Contacts (to keep the original
Address Book up-to-date) - because he also syncs with his PA's machine
which doesn't have Key Contacts on it and he just wants to copy over his
updated Contacts.

I have tried simply sync'ing with her PC to his Palm and again
the Contacts are not working so it doen't appear to be a PC problem - as
neither work.

I have also wiped the Palm and reinstalled everything - no joy.

The only thing I haven't done is completely reinstalled Outlook.

Hope this makes sense!

Any idea what could be causing this?

Thanks

Have you tried deleting the Outlook/Palm conduit in Outlook? If memory
serves me right, it is in the Notes area. Delete this, uninstall the Palm
Outlook sync software (check to see the program files folder is gone too) ,
reset that Palm and reinstall everything.

If that does not fix it, I suggest that you look at what apps that you have
installed on the Palm that may have messed up the sync. Then goto
www.palm.com and search the knowledge base, there is tons of info there.

You can't sync with OE anyway.

Outlook's Address Book _is_ the Contacts folder.

This sounds interesting - but not sure where it is. The only problem is
that I am beginning to think it's not an Outlook issue because it doesn't
work on the other (his PA's) PC either.

What I did do was completely wipe the Palm and re-sync. But that didn't
help.

Not sure where the OL/Palm conduit is though? Can you help further please.

Many thanks

Chris

It was sync'ing with OE! The Palm can be set up to sync with it. The
problem was it hadn't been set up to do so but had suddenly switched.
However, I fixed that particular issue.

IThe problem I have now is that I can sync using 'Key Contacts' (which
ignores the Address Book in the Palm) and sync's the Key Contacts folder in
the Palm.

What I want to be able to do is sync the Address Book in the Palm as well.
This is not happening. Therefore, if we did not have the Key Contacts
program we could not sync Contacts at all.

Many thanks
