Outlook/OE Coexist

I would like to know if it is possible for Outlook and OE to coexist while I
decide if I like one better than the other. I don't want to irreversibly
lose anything in the process.

I ran this thread through the OE group but never did get a good analysis.
Someone suggested I run it through here? Any comments?

Thank,

Tom

You certainly can. The only thing you CAN'T do is to have more than one
default email client - it would have to be one or the other.

They can coexist and do , however mail will be downloaded via whichever you
use. This may prove confussing.
OE is installed by default with win and IE, OE is also used as a newsreader,
OL has no newsreeder capability.
Both OL and win use certain OE files/dll's. OE shouldnt be uninstalled.

You can, of course, set one of them to leave mail on the server. Then you
can see the same mail on both [or change to Thunderbird of course] :o)

Great idea Jim. What's Thunderbird? I remember a cheap wine by that name a
long time ago. <g>

I take that you are joking, but in case you aren't, it's the standalone
mail client from the Mozilla Foundation. It's very good and has its own
spam filter. I don't like it for newsgroups but use it exclusively for
mail. Outlook proper is much more than an email program, but T'bird knocks
spots off OE. Answers here http://www.mozilla.org/support/thunderbird/faq

Others have told you that they easily coexist (which is true).

I note that you used OE to post here. Be aware that Outlook doesn't
include a newsreader, so if you stop using OE in favor of Outlook,
you'd still need to continue using OE for news, or find another
newsreader. (Other people have mentioned Thunderbird, I use Xnews,
there are other good choices.)

Thanks, I understand

Jim,

Actually, I wasn't joking. I had not heard of Thunderbird although I am
familiar with Mozilla Firefox. Thunderbird sounds good though.

Be aware the OE is part of Internet Explorer, while OL is part of Office.
Dunno if you can delete OE without deleting IE, and you need IE for Windows
Update. I suppose you can delete OL without affecting your other Office
programs.

If you delete Outlook Express, Outlook will not function, as it depends
on some of OE's files.

Thanks guys, I am not thinking about deleting OE or IE. I just wanted to
know if it is ok to run them both at once.

Thanks,

Tom

I run both at once. No problems. Which do you intend to use for what
functions?

If you want to use OE for mails and newsgroups don't add server info to
Outlook for them- and vice versa.

Alan,

Still having never used Outlook, I can't imagine why anyone would use it
without using the email portion. I know there is a calendar and task
function that would be useful but if one is not going to use the email
portion, aren't there better standalone products that do the calendar and
task functions?

Tom
