outlook mail in vista - using follow up

just got Vista. Used to be reliant on my Follow Up file as a means of
keeping track of emails that needed attention. Now they come up in a 'to do'
list on the other side of the screen, you have to actually open the message
to see the body of the email, and it seems you have to actually open the
message and choose the flag it 'completed' instead of just being able to
click on the flag. it's really annoying and time consuming - am i being
thick, is there any easy way to get it back to how it was (i.e. working the
same as a file in my inbox)...
