Outlook Mail Icon in Sys Tray

Outlook 2000 shows an envelope icon in the system tray when email is in the
inbox. This gives me an indication that I have new mail.

Recently, I have found that the envelope appears even when I don't have
Outlook open and running. sometimes it show 2 envelopes. When I click on
either of the envelope icon I get an "operation failed" warning and then
click Ok to clear. I get no other action than this when I click the icon.

Any idea of why this has started?
