Outlook is sending email that I'm not sending

Sometimes when I click on Send/Receive to retrieve email
from a POP server, the progress message says it's sending
1-2 items, even though I have no pending items in my
Outbox. When I check "Sent Items", there is nothing
recorded there. I am wondering what Outlook is sending!

I found an option labeled "Enable message logging
(troubleshooting)", which I checked, but I can't find the
message log, so it's not particularly helpful. There was
no information in Help about where it's located, and the
Event Viewer didn't show any Outlook logs.

So -- two questions:

* How do I find out what Outlook is sending on those
occasions where it is sending stuff even when I didn't
write an email?

* Where do I find the message log that's enabled when I
select the Advanced Option to "enable message logging"?

I am using Outlook 2002 (10.3513.3501) SP-1

Thanks,

You should run a full "updated" virus check. If you do not have an updatable
antivirus there is a free antivirus available (AVG) from www.grisoft.com.
You should also get and run (they are free) spybot search and destroy and
ad-aware. Right now your machine is proably propagating some kind of
virus/worm for some ass on the net. "Perhaps" you computer is one of the
nodes that is doing a DoS attack at best buy's site right now.

Sounds like you have a virus, go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and click on the free virus scan link labled "Scan Now.
It's Free!". It will install a browser plugin on your machine and then allow you to choose scanning ptions

Also McAfee has the Stinger tool and Symantec has virus specific free removal tools that are free for everyone. If you're not running Antivirus software AVG is a great totally free to home users AV product. They are at www.grisoft.com

I would not open your e-mail program until you get cleaned up, also open task manager and disable any running process you don't recognize. Once everything callms down look in your sent items folder and contact those people you did send messages to and warn them of the viruses you found and cleaned from your PC. So right down the names as you find them so they know what it is and can find out and how to remove them.

Outlook is probably sending read-receipts for messages that requested them.
First, check your read-receipt settings on Tools -> Options -> E-mail
Options -> Tracking Options to make sure that you're not automatically
sending read-receipts for mail that requests them. Also, upgrade to SP-3 of
Outlook 2002 - there was a bug in Outlook 2002 that sent read-receipts for
any unread message that had requested one and was deleted when you emptied
your Deleted Items. That's been fixed in SP-3.

Hi Jeff. Thanks for these suggestions. I have "Ask before
sending" checked, so it shouldn't automatically be
sending receipts. So I may be encountering the bug you
mention. (The other responders mentioned viruses, but I
have repeatedly scanned clean, including with AVG.)

I will try upgrading Outlook to SP-3 to see if the
problem goes away.
