Outlook: how do I shut off proofing?

I have done something on my keyboard that seems to do the following to my
emails now when I'm replying to them: I get a raised period for every space
between words. I get a drop arrow for every 'enter' (also known as a
'carriage return), and another symbol (proofing symbol?) at every line ending
or return. And I don't know how to shut this (annoying) feature off.

You have something turned on in Word that shows the characters. This is
nothing to do with Outlook.

The button you want in Word looks like a capital P.
